Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano Challenges Americans to Build a Ready and Resilient Nation

In a major speech September 29th, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano ended National Preparedness Month (NPM) with a call to build a year-round culture of readiness and resilience in America's communities. Calling our nation's security and preparedness a "shared responsibility," the Secretary's historic call to action highlighted our long history of resilience and community spirit in the face of adversity.

Some National Preparedness Month Highlights
- More than 2,700 organizations join the NPM Coalition and committed to promoting emergency preparedness during September
- The Ready Campaign launched new public service advertising. Those ads were localized for a number of other cities, including Austin, Texas, Atlanta, Chicago, Eugene, Ore., Houston, Kansas City, Mo., Los Angeles, New York, NY and San Francisco—as well as the states of Utah and Virginia and the U.S. Navy and U.S. Virgin Islands.
- Secretary Janet Napolitano and Girl Scouts of the USA unveiled a Girl Scout preparedness patch—designed to engage Girl Scouts and their families in personal preparedness for all emergencies—and announced a new affiliation between DHS Citizen Corps and the Girl Scouts to advance community preparedness nationwide.
- In addition to the President and the U.S. Army, 26 Governors and numerous cities and counties issued proclamations.
- More than 500 classrooms across the country participated in the Ready Campaign webinar on H1N1 preparedness. This webinar facilitated a presentation to teachers and the students in their classrooms on flu / H1N1 in an educational, interesting, student-friendly way to inform classrooms on the science behind the flu, the importance of preparing, and the types of precautions that could help them.
