Heavy snow and rising temperatures triggered a rash of major avalanches. Huge debris piled over highways and cut off access to the Kenai Peninsula for four days. A mile-long avalanche bowled over transmission lines, cutting off power to 2,000 Alaskans in four towns. While attempting to clear tracks, a railroad worker was killed when a slide buried him alive.
