Thursday, April 17, 1997
The Red River, swollen from rain and a rapid snowmelt, tipped over its banks and flooded northwestern Minnesota. Water as deep as 54 feet deep spilled three miles inland to flood entire towns. Power was cut off to reduce the chance of electrical fire. The whole city of East Grand Forks was evacuated to the University of Minnesota Crookston campus. Rising water shut down the water purification for the few locals who remained. Thousands couldn’t return home for over a month.
